What's Breast Cancer?
Cancer happens when cell growth happens uncontrollably and when this haphazard growth happens in the breast cells, it is called breast cancer. There are many types of breast cancer, but we will share that in detail later.
Facts: How Common?
- From the national cancer registry, the five most common among Malaysian women were cancers of the breast (32.1%), colorectal (10.7%), cervix uteri (7.7%), ovary (6.1%) and lungs (5.6%).
- About one in 20 women in Malaysia are at risk of getting breast cancer.
- According to The Breast Cancer Foundation Malaysia; Chinese women seemed to be at the greatest risk, with an incidence of 59.7 per 100,000; followed by Indian women (55.8 per 100,000) and Malay women (33.9 per 100,000).
- Like all cancers, early detection can save lives, however most of the newly diagnosed breast cancers were already in advanced stages. How unfortunate is that?
Facts: Risk Factors
- Having breast tissue! That means, even men can have breast cancer, however the risk is lower.
- Advanced age. Most breast cancer develop in woman with advanced age.
- Family history of breast cancer and having breast cancer gene. (BRCA1, BRCA2)
- Women who have children above the age of 35 or doesn’t have any children are at a higher risk of getting breast cancer.
- Obesity and physical inactivity
What Can Every Woman Do?
It’s simple! Do a BSE- Breast Self- Examination. You may begin BSE at the age of 20 and do it monthly. Regularly examining your breast on your own is a no-cost, convenient tool that can be used.

How is Breast Cancer Diagnosed?
- Breast exam by doctors to identify any lumps or lymph nodes
- Mammogram, which is likened to a breast X-ray.
- Breast ultrasound can be used to examine lumps/ cysts
- Biopsy; where some breast tissues are taken for testing
