What Is Meningococcal Disease — and Who Must Be Vaccinated?
Meningococcal disease is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria and can cause two life-threatening conditions: bacterial meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and meningococcal septicaemia (bloodstream infection). Both are medical emergencies that can progress from early symptoms to death within 24–48 hours — making prevention through vaccination far more effective than waiting to treat.
The bacteria spread through respiratory droplets and close contact — explaining why risk is heightened in crowd settings such as Hajj and Umrah gatherings, university dormitories, military barracks, and mass public events. Several serogroups of Neisseria meningitidis exist — the quadrivalent vaccine covers serogroups A, C, W, and Y, which account for the majority of serious disease globally.
In Malaysia, meningococcal vaccination has a specific mandatory requirement: all pilgrims travelling for Hajj or Umrah must present a valid meningococcal vaccination certificate to Saudi authorities. This certificate must be obtained from a registered clinic and is issued on the same day as vaccination at our Damansara Jaya clinic. The meningococcal vaccine protects against one of the causes of bacterial meningitis — Neisseria meningitidis. It does not protect against meningitis caused by other bacteria (such as pneumococcal meningitis, covered by the PPSV23 vaccine) or viral meningitis.
