What a DNA Test Actually Tells You
Your genes are the one part of your health you cannot change — but you can read them. The analysis reads genetic material inside your cells and answers one of two questions: who am I related to, or what is my body built for.
The first is a relationship test. To test DNA for a biological link, the lab compares genetic markers between two individuals — most often a father and child. Half a child's markers come from each parent, so the match is either there or it is not. That is how a paternity test reaches 99.99% certainty, and why siblings, grandparents and immigration cases work the same way.
The second is a gene test for wellness — genes tied to metabolism, diet response and fitness behaviour. It diagnoses nothing. Collection takes about ten minutes at the clinic. The laboratory then needs 5–7 working days for standard paternity, 7–10 for legal or immigration, 10–14 for prenatal, and 3–4 weeks for a wellness gene test, which reads far more genes.
Yes — father-and-child is standard and the mother’s sample is not required, though including it strengthens the statistics. Both father and child must attend so we can collect samples and verify identity. The swab is painless, and we test children of any age, including newborns.
