Health Screening for Women: What You Need to Know

Maintaining good health is more than just eating well and staying active. For women, regular health screenings are crucial for detecting potential issues before they become serious. These screenings help catch problems early, often before any symptoms arise. And let’s face it, the earlier you catch something, the easier it is to manage. Whether you’re in your 20s or 60s, understanding what screenings you need and when you need them can go a long way in keeping you healthy.

Health Screening for Women in Malaysia

As of 2021, the life expectancy for Malaysian women is approximately 77.3 years, which is higher than that of men (73.5 years). This reflects the overall trend of women living longer than men in many countries.

Breast cancer accounts for about 32% of all cancer cases among women. The age-standardised incidence rate is approximately 48.3 per 100,000 women. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Malaysia, with an incidence rate of about 12.7 per 100,000 women.

A lot of these statistics are informed by public health awareness programs, which encourage Malaysians to take care of their health. For women in particular, patients found great success as more and more people take on annual health screenings.

Breast Cancer Screening

breast cancer early detection

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and early detection can save lives. For most women, mammograms start around the age of 40. But if you have a family history of breast cancer, you might need to begin earlier. Mammograms help spot abnormalities in breast tissue, and although it can be uncomfortable for a few minutes, the benefits are worth it. You could also check for cancer markers with blood test or get a second opinion when you notice any abnormalities with a breast examination.

Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer used to be one of the most common causes of cancer death in women, but thanks to routine screening, those numbers have dropped dramatically. If you’re over 21, your doctor will likely recommend a Pap smear every three years. This simple test looks for abnormal cells on the cervix that could lead to cancer.

In addition to the Pap test, there’s the HPV test, which screens for the virus that causes most cervical cancers. Most women get the Pap and HPV tests together once they reach 30, but your doctor will suggest what’s best based on your individual risk factors.

Bone Density Test

As we age, our bones naturally lose density. For some women, especially those who are postmenopausal, this can lead to osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weak and are more likely to break. That’s why doctors recommend a bone density test (also known as a DEXA scan) for women 65 and older, or younger if you have risk factors like early menopause or a family history of osteoporosis. This test helps determine the strength of your bones and whether you need to take steps to prevent fractures. .

Cholesterol and Blood Pressure

Heart disease is one of the leading cause of death, making regular cholesterol and blood pressure screenings essential. High cholesterol can build up in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke, while high blood pressure (hypertension) puts additional strain on your heart.

Your doctor will likely recommend starting cholesterol tests in your 20s, especially if you have risk factors like obesity or family history. Blood pressure checks, however, should begin even earlier and are often part of routine check-ups.

Diabetes Screening

If you’re overweight, have a family history of diabetes, or had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, you may be at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Regular blood sugar testing can help catch diabetes early, before symptoms like excessive thirst or fatigue become noticeable.

The fasting blood sugar test and A1C test are two common ways to check your blood sugar levels. Even if you feel fine, monitoring your blood sugar is important, as diabetes can lead to other health problems like heart disease or kidney damage.

Colon Cancer Screening

Colon cancer might not be on your radar, but it’s something to be mindful of, especially as you approach your 50s. A colonoscopy is the gold standard for screening, and while it’s not anyone’s favourite appointment, it’s one of the most effective ways to catch colon cancer early. Some doctors may recommend starting colonoscopies earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer.

If you’re not quite ready for a full colonoscopy, there are other options like stool DNA tests and fecal occult blood tests, which look for hidden blood in your stool—a possible sign of colon cancer.

Reproductive Health

Sexual health is a key part of overall well-being. Regular STI testing is important if you’re sexually active, regardless of whether you have symptoms. Many STIs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, can be asymptomatic but still cause long-term damage, including fertility issues.

If you’re planning on starting a family, or are having trouble conceiving, fertility assessments can provide valuable information. Your doctor can guide you through various tests to assess egg health, hormone levels, and other factors that influence fertility.

General Health Screenings

Finally, general health check-ups help ensure that everything is functioning as it should. Keeping track of your BMI (Body Mass Index) can provide insight into your overall health, although it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Screening for vitamin deficiencies, like vitamin D or iron, is also important, especially if you’re feeling fatigued or experiencing other symptoms.

Your thyroid plays a big role in regulating metabolism, and a thyroid function test can help detect conditions like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, which affect your energy levels, weight, and overall well-being.
