Yes — ultrasound is the gold standard investigation for gallstones and is more sensitive than CT scan for detecting gallbladder stones. A properly prepared upper abdominal ultrasound (fasted) will reliably identify or exclude gallstones, assess the gallbladder wall for thickening or inflammation, and evaluate the bile duct for dilation. If you have right upper quadrant pain, bloating after fatty meals, or have been told to "check for gallstones" — walk in after 4–6 hours of fasting for a same-day assessment.
Ultrasound is completely painless. A water-based gel is applied to the skin surface to improve contact between the probe and your body, and the probe is gently moved over the skin. You may feel mild pressure over tender areas — if your abdomen is already painful, the probe placement may be slightly uncomfortable, but the scan itself causes no pain. There are no needles and no invasive elements involved.
Results are available immediately — the doctor reviews the ultrasound images in real time during the scan and discusses findings with you before you leave.
