What Each Blood Test Reveals — and Why It Matters

A single blood draw checks for multiple conditions at once. Here's what the key panels tell your doctor about your health.

🍬

Fasting Blood Glucose & HbA1c — Diabetes Check

Fasting glucose is the gold standard for diagnosing diabetes and pre-diabetes. HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the past three months — essential for patients already managing diabetes to see whether control is actually working. Between these two tests, your doctor gets a complete picture of your glucose metabolism. Malaysia has one of the highest diabetes rates in Asia, and roughly half of those affected haven't been diagnosed.

Full Lipid Panel — Cholesterol & Heart Risk

Total cholesterol alone tells you very little — what matters is the full picture: LDL (the type that deposits in arteries and causes blockages), HDL (the protective type you want higher), and triglycerides (raised by excess sugar and alcohol). Your doctor combines your lipid values with your age, blood pressure, smoking status, and family history to calculate your actual cardiovascular risk — which is far more clinically meaningful than simply comparing a number to a reference range.

Kidney Function — Creatinine & eGFR

Your kidneys work hard to filter waste from the blood — and chronic kidney disease (CKD) develops silently, with no symptoms until more than half of kidney function has already been lost. Creatinine and eGFR give your doctor an accurate picture of kidney filtering capacity. Patients with diabetes, hypertension, or those on long-term NSAIDs or antibiotics should check kidney function regularly. Early CKD is very manageable; late-stage CKD is not.

Liver Function — ALT, AST & Bilirubin

The liver handles metabolism, detoxification, and protein production — and liver damage is usually silent until it's quite advanced. Elevated ALT and AST indicate liver cell inflammation, which can result from fatty liver disease, excessive alcohol, medication effects, or viral hepatitis. Bilirubin levels reflect how well the liver is processing waste products. Knowing your liver function is especially important if you drink regularly, take long-term medications, or have been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.

Full Blood Count — Anaemia, Infection & More

One of the most information-dense tests available. The FBC measures your red cells (and haemoglobin — low levels cause anaemia, which causes fatigue, breathlessness, and pale skin), your white cells (elevated in infection, inflammation, or certain blood disorders), and platelets (which affect clotting). If you've been more tired than usual, getting breathless easily, or bruising without good reason, an FBC is often where the investigation begins — and frequently where the answer is found.

Thyroid Function — TSH, Free T4 & Free T3

Thyroid dysfunction affects a significant proportion of the population — predominantly women — and is chronically under-diagnosed because its symptoms (fatigue, weight changes, mood changes, hair loss, cold or heat intolerance) are easily attributed to stress or lifestyle. TSH is the primary screening test; if abnormal, Free T4 and Free T3 are added to characterise whether the thyroid is overactive or underactive. A single blood test has changed the lives of many patients who spent years not understanding why they felt the way they did.

How to Prepare for Your Blood Test

✅ Before You Come

  • Fast for 8 hours for fasting glucose and lipid tests — water is fine
  • Take your regular daily medication as normal with water
  • Bring any previous blood test results if you have them
  • Note all current medications and supplements for your doctor
  • Come in the morning if possible — overnight fast is the simplest approach

❌ Avoid Before Testing

  • No food or caloric drinks for 8 hours before fasting tests
  • Avoid strenuous exercise 24 hours before — affects creatinine and FBC
  • No alcohol 24–48 hours before, especially before liver function tests
  • Avoid high-dose vitamin C supplements on the day of urine testing
  • Don't skip medications — take them as usual unless specifically advised otherwise

Blood Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from patients in Jalan Ipoh, Sentul, and surrounding KL areas.

It depends on which tests are being done. Fasting blood glucose and lipid panels require 8 hours without food — water is fine throughout. HbA1c, thyroid function, full blood count, kidney function, and liver function can be done without fasting. If you can't fast, come in anyway — our doctor will advise on which tests to proceed with and which are better repeated after fasting. Coming in the morning after an overnight fast is usually the most practical approach.
Basic panels — including FBC, fasting glucose, and some kidney markers — are processed on-site and available within the same visit. More comprehensive panels (detailed lipids, thyroid function, liver function, HbA1c) may be sent to an external laboratory and return within 24 to 48 hours. Your doctor will advise on the turnaround for each test ordered before you leave, and will either discuss results during your visit or contact you when the external results return.
Yes. You don't need a referral letter. Walk in, tell our team you'd like a blood test, and our in-house doctor will see you, take a brief history, and advise on which tests are most clinically appropriate for your situation. If you have a referral or previous results, bring them — they provide useful context. But they're not required to walk in and get tested.
In most cases, continue taking your regular medications as usual with a small amount of water, even during a fasting period. This is especially important for blood pressure medications, heart medications, and thyroid replacement. The exception is diabetes medication (particularly metformin or insulin) — check with our doctor when you arrive and they will advise based on your specific medications.
Your doctor will explain any abnormal results clearly before you leave and advise on next steps — which might be a repeat test, lifestyle adjustments, starting or adjusting medication, further investigations, or a specialist referral. A single elevated result isn't always a definitive diagnosis — it's the starting point for further evaluation. You won't leave with just a printout of numbers — you'll leave with a clear, specific plan.
