Unexplained joint pain and swelling, recurring mouth ulcers, skin rashes, hair loss, or fatigue out of proportion to activity — these symptoms can point to an autoimmune condition. The ANA (antinuclear antibody) test is the appropriate starting screen. Walk in at Klinik Dr. Prevents Kepong anytime, 24 hours.

The antinuclear antibody (ANA) test detects antibodies in the blood that target the body's own cell nuclei — a hallmark of autoimmune activity. A positive ANA doesn't automatically confirm a specific autoimmune disease, but it's the correct first step when a patient's symptoms and history suggest the immune system may be attacking its own tissues. It's ordered when symptoms have been present for weeks or months without a clear explanation — not for acute illness.
Autoimmune conditions are significantly more common in women and tend to first manifest in young to middle-aged adults. In Malaysia, lupus (SLE) is more prevalent than in many Western populations, and Sjögren's syndrome — which causes dry eyes and dry mouth alongside systemic symptoms — is frequently underdiagnosed. Your GP interprets ANA results alongside your full clinical picture; a positive result prompts targeted follow-up testing, and a negative result in the context of suggestive symptoms may still warrant further investigation.
Joint pain, butterfly facial rash, fatigue, hair loss, mouth ulcers, photosensitivity. Most common autoimmune condition in young Malaysian women. ANA positive in over 95% of SLE cases.
Symmetrical joint swelling and stiffness, worst in the morning. ANA may be positive. RF (rheumatoid factor) and anti-CCP are the more specific tests your doctor may add.
Dry eyes, dry mouth, joint pain, fatigue. Often underdiagnosed because symptoms are non-specific. ANA positive in most cases; anti-SSA and anti-SSB antibodies are confirmatory.
Skin thickening, Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers turning white/blue in cold), joint pain. ANA often strongly positive with specific patterns that help identify the condition.
Months of unexplained joint pain, fatigue, or rashes deserve a proper investigation — not just painkillers. Our in-house GP at Taman Usahawan Kepong reviews ANA results in context of your full clinical picture. Walk in at any time.
