Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in Malaysia — affecting an estimated 10 to 15% of children and 6 to 9% of adults. Many Malaysians accept daily symptoms (morning cough, exercise-triggered wheeze, waking at night breathless) as "normal" or "just their asthma" — when in fact well-controlled asthma means no daytime symptoms, no night waking, no exercise limitation, and minimal reliever inhaler use. The goal of asthma management is not just to treat attacks — it's to prevent them. At Klinik Dr. Prevents Kota Kemuning on Jalan Anggerik Vanilla, our doctors assess asthma control systematically, prescribe the right controller inhaler combination, review inhaler technique, identify triggers, and manage acute attacks around the clock.
The most common reason for poor asthma control in Malaysia is incorrect inhaler technique. Even the right medication prescribed at the right dose becomes ineffective if the inhaler is used incorrectly — too fast, not enough breath-hold, device not primed, spacer not used for metered-dose inhalers. Our nurse demonstrates and checks technique at every visit. The second most common cause is over-reliance on reliever inhalers (blue SABA inhalers like Ventolin) at the expense of preventive controller inhalers (ICS-containing inhalers). The doctor reviews and adjusts the balance at every consultation.
For acute asthma attacks — sudden severe wheeze, difficulty completing sentences, oxygen saturation dropping — we provide immediate nebuliser treatment, systemic steroids, and oxygen supplementation in our urgent care bay. If the attack is severe or doesn't respond, we initiate IV medication and arrange hospital transfer with a referral letter. We also combine asthma management with relevant blood tests (eosinophil count, IgE for allergic asthma), allergy testing, and annual flu vaccination — a critical preventive measure for asthma patients. Patients from Kota Kemuning, Bukit Rimau, Kemuning Utama, Bandar Botanic, Kemuning Greenhills, Setia Alam, USJ, and Shah Alam reach us in 5 to 12 minutes' drive.
Short-acting beta-2 agonists (Ventolin/salbutamol, Bricanyl). Used for immediate relief of symptoms. Fast-acting, lasts 4-6 hours. Should be used rarely — if you're using it >2x/week, your asthma is not well controlled and controller therapy needs adjustment.
The foundation of asthma prevention — reduce airway inflammation. Fluticasone, budesonide, beclomethasone. Not steroids you swallow — minimal systemic effect at standard doses. Must be used daily even when feeling well. Most common cause of poor control is stopping ICS when symptoms improve.
Long-acting beta-2 agonist added to ICS for moderate-severe asthma — Seretide (fluticasone + salmeterol), Symbicort (budesonide + formoterol). Symbicort can also be used as both reliever and controller (SMART therapy) — one inhaler does both.
Nebulised salbutamol + ipratropium for immediate bronchospasm relief. Oral or IV prednisolone for airway inflammation. Oxygen supplementation via mask. IV magnesium sulphate and hospital transfer for severe attacks not responding to initial treatment.
A written plan given to every patient explaining what to do when symptoms worsen — yellow zone (increase controller), red zone (start oral steroids, go to clinic immediately). Reduces emergency visits. Given to parents of children and to adult patients.
Influenza is one of the leading triggers of severe asthma exacerbation. Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for all asthma patients aged 6 months and above. We stock quadrivalent flu vaccines year-round.
Our Kota Kemuning clinic provides 24-hour asthma care for the surrounding district. Acute attacks treated immediately with nebuliser and oxygen. Combine regular asthma review with flu vaccination and allergy blood panel in one visit.

Common questions from patients across the 5 km area.
Well-controlled asthma means: no daytime symptoms more than twice a week, no night-waking from asthma symptoms, no exercise limitation, reliever inhaler used less than twice a week, and no exacerbations requiring oral steroids or hospital admission. If you're experiencing more than this, your controller therapy needs review.
No — this is the most common mistake. Controller inhalers (ICS) work by reducing underlying airway inflammation, which continues even when you feel well. Stopping when asymptomatic leads to inflammation building back up, making the next exposure more likely to cause an attack. Use daily as prescribed even on symptom-free days.
Childhood asthma frequently improves significantly or remits during adolescence — many children with mild intermittent asthma appear to 'grow out of it.' However, asthma often returns in adulthood. Even if symptoms are minimal now, maintaining good trigger control and keeping an inhaler available is important.
Yes — and it's encouraged. Exercise is important for lung health and cardiovascular fitness. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (wheeze during or after exercise) is manageable with a SABA inhaler 15 minutes before exercise and with optimised controller therapy. Very few asthma patients should be restricted from exercise.
No — the flu vaccine does not trigger asthma attacks. It is an inactivated (killed) vaccine and cannot cause flu. The small risk of a mild sore arm is far outweighed by the significant reduction in severe asthma exacerbations triggered by influenza. Strongly recommended annually.
Go immediately to hospital (or call emergency services) if: severe breathlessness, can't complete full sentences, lips or fingertips turning blue, peak flow below 50% of your personal best, reliever inhaler not helping after 10-15 minutes, or confusion/drowsiness. Walk in to our clinic for moderate attacks that respond to initial treatment.
