What Is Diphtheria and Why Is Vaccination Essential?
Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It primarily affects the nose and throat, where the bacteria produce a toxin that creates a thick, greyish membrane across the airway — making breathing and swallowing progressively more difficult. Without rapid treatment, it can cause complete airway obstruction, heart damage, and nerve paralysis. Before vaccination became widespread, diphtheria was one of the most feared childhood diseases worldwide.
Today, diphtheria is almost entirely preventable through vaccination. In Malaysia, it is included in the combined DTaP-IPV-Hib vaccine given as part of the national immunisation schedule from 2 months of age. Booster doses maintain protection through childhood and into adulthood — since the diphtheria toxoid component of the vaccine does not confer lifelong immunity from a single series alone.
